Yankees 5, Blue Jays 4: At Toronto, Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead, two-run double in a four-run sixth inning and Andy Pettitte won consecutive starts for the first time this season as New York beat the Blue Jays to extend its winning streak to four. Alex Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with a walk, moving his average up to .301.
Indians 4, Twins 0: At Minneapolis, Paul Byrd’s first shutout in more than two years and Travis Hafner’s homer helped Cleveland earn a series split with a victory over Minnesota. Michael Cuddyer, Justin Morneau and Torii Hunter – hitters No. 4-6 in the order for the Twins – were a combined 1 for 10 in the game and 3 for 31 in the series.
Tigers 6, Devil Rays 4: At Detroit, Ryan Raburn hit a tiebreaking single in a four-run seventh and the Tigers rallied to beat Tampa Bay and stop their longest losing steak of the season. The defending A.L. champions had lost five straight and 12 of 15 since they had baseball’s best record on July 21.
Angels 4, Red Sox 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Curt Schilling returned from the disabled list and gave up a tiebreaking home run to Maicer Izturis in the seventh inning as Los Angeles beat Boston in a matchup of division leaders. Justin Speier pitched a scoreless seventh for his first victory with the Angels.
Athletics 9, Rangers 7 (13): At Arlington, Texas, Mike Piazza singled in the go-ahead run in the 13th inning and seven Oakland pitchers combined for 21 strikeouts in a victory over the Rangers. Kiko Calero pitched the 13th to earn his first save in four chances, striking out Marlon Byrd with runners on the corners to end it.
