Church anniversary

Pullman’s Simpson United Methodist Church is planning several events to mark its 125th anniversary.

The first is a free “Cool Jazz on a Hot Night” concert next Saturday at 7 p.m. The community is invited to attend the celebration featuring the Michael Owcharuk Trio and trumpet player Matt Postle.

The concert will be in the church sanctuary at 325 N.E. Maple St. Refreshments will be served.

Buddhist retreat

The Spokane Buddhist Temple will host a weekend Buddhist retreat beginning at 7 p.m. Friday at Mukogawa Fort Wright.

Kenji Akahoshi will speak on “Nembutsu Journey – A Path to Wholeness.” The retreat will end at 11 a.m. Aug. 19.

The cost is $140 per person, which includes lodging and meals.

Interfaith concert

The interfaith rock/folk group Common Ground will perform Friday at 7 p.m. at the North Spokane Unity Center, 4123 E. Lincoln Road.

The group features Grammy-nominated guitarist and singer Mark Turnbull and Dallas musician Mark Austin.

The group also will perform at the South Hill Unity Church at 9 and 11 a.m. on Aug. 19. The church is at 29th Avenue and Bernard Street.

Movie night

Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church will host a free movie night for the community at 7 p.m. Friday.

The scheduled movie is “Napoleon Dynamite,” rated PG. Refreshments will be served.
