Fairchild’s Berquist qualifies for Games

Medical Lake’s Michael W. Berquist, an active duty Tech Sergeant at Fairchild Air Force Base, has qualified to represent the United States at the fourth annual CISM Military World Games, Oct. 14-21 in Hyderabad, India.

Berquist, one of five men representing the United States, will compete in the triathlon, a 1,500-meter swim, 25-mile bike ride and 10.2-mile run.

Berquist qualified after finishing sixth overall and third among Air Force members at the Armed Forces Triathlon Championships held July 25-29 at Point Mugu Naval Base in Ventura, Calif. He finished the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride and 10-kilometer run in 2 hours, 1 minute and 22 seconds.

Tennis

Gonzaga’s men’s team has been honored with an International Tennis Association All-Academic Team Award for earning a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.2 or better.

Additionally, six members of the team have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2006-07 school year.

Charles Adams, Roman Dojcak, Michael Lukomski, Marco Antonio Pineda, Zack Radetzky and Brett Womack earned the accolade after earning a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Track and field

For the third year in a row, Hayden Lake’s George Mathews won the men’s 60-64 hammer throw at the USA Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships held Aug. 2-5 at the University of Maine in Orono.

Mathews’ toss went 164 feet, 7 inches.

Miscellany

Mike Miller has been named the athletic academic coordinator for Eastern Washington University.

Miller, a former academic coordinator at Gonzaga, will meet with students on a daily basis and discuss how they can meet their full academic success.

Dick Eglet, Clyde Pock and Dennis Myers will be inducted into the Washington Officials Association Hall of Fame Saturday at the Yakima Convention Center in Yakima.

In addition, Spokane’s Melody Swanson, a gymnastics official, and Chewelah’s Denise Smith, a volleyball official, will be honored for winning an official of the year award.

•The Southeastern Washington Football Officials Association is recruiting men and women interested in officiating junior high, middle school and high school football games.

•A mandatory rules clinic for Idaho high school football coaches and referees will be held Tuesday at Coeur d’Alene High School.
