Tribe to help build mission facility
The Coeur d’Alene Tribal Council has agreed to provide $1.5 million to help build a visitors center near the historic Cataldo Mission, east of Coeur d’Alene off Interstate 90.
The nonprofit Association for Sacred Encounters plans to build the 9,000-square-foot center and provide for capital improvement resources at the Cataldo Mission park.
The center will house an exhibit, “Sacred Encounters: Father De Smet & the Indians of the Rocky Mountain West,” to help tell the story of the Cataldo Mission, the tribe and the missionaries who were part of creating the mission. The exhibit will highlight the time of early contact between European settlers and the people of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.
Project costs are estimated at about $3.38 million. Additional funding will come from state and private grants and individual donations.

Garage fire blamed on tossed cigarette
A garage burned in northwest Spokane on Thursday morning, and firefighters believe the fire may have been caused by a discarded cigarette butt.
The fire, reported at 3:49 a.m., burned a garage on the alley at 1608 W. Kiernan. It appears to have started near an attached patio.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire within half an hour, but it did damage the home’s vinyl siding.
