Athletics 8, White Sox 5: At Oakland, Calif., Kurt Suzuki homered for the second straight day, a game-winning, three-run home run in the 10th inning, and the Athletics beat Chicago to complete a three-game sweep. Designated hitter Mike Piazza had three hits including a triple and home run for Oakland. Athletics’ reliever Ruddy Lugo earned the win after throwing a perfect 10th.
Tigers 8, Yankees 5: At New York, Carlos Guillen hit a first-inning grand slam off Mike Mussina, and Ivan Rodriguez also homered to help Detroit beat New York for the Yankees’ third straight loss after winning nine of their past 10. Justin Verlander held New York’s powerful offense in check, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings to win his second consecutive start.
Angels 4, Blue Jays 3: At Toronto, Kelvim Escobar shut down his former team, Gary Matthews Jr. homered and Los Angeles held on to beat the Blue Jays, just the second win for the Angles in their past 16 games at Rogers Centre. Escobar (13-6) allowed one run and five hits over seven innings, walked none and struck out nine. He won back-to-back starts for the first time since mid-June and lowered his ERA to 2.68.
Royals 6, Rangers 2: At Arlington, Texas, starting in place of the injured Brandon McCarthy, John Rheinecker gave up only two runs in 7 1/3 solid innings, leading Kansas City to a win over Texas. John Buck hit a three-run double in the Royals’ four-run eighth inning. Rangers reliever Willie Eyre took the loss, giving up four runs in 2/3 of an inning.
