It will likely be an off-year for one of the usual suspects, as the Davenport Gorillas are currently dealing with ineligible players and athletic code violations. Six seniors graduated last season, and no underclassmen made the all-league teams. Davenport’s arch-rival Reardan returns some key second team all-league players on offense: OL Rory Beckstrom and OL Matt Carstens. Derek Toney, a first-team selection on defense last year, and fullback Nick Everett, will also make an impact for Reardan, along with second-team selections James Androes (DL) and Chad Godley (DB). Lind-Ritzville senior Antonio Najera (OL) is the only other returning second-team pick on offense in the league. Reardan coach Eric Nikkola calls Republic the league’s dark horse.

No all-league offensive players return this season, as the league lost a lot of talented seniors last year. Defending state champion Asotin will be tough again with Cody Davis as a returning first team defensive lineman. Elsewhere, Dayton returns all-leaguer Eric Fulbright (DB) and linebacker Tiger Tate, DeSales has back junior linebacker Bryce Hayunga and DL Cory Gall, and Pomeroy will get a lift from return specialist Tye Knebel, an all-league selection last season as a sophomore.

Touchet and Garfield-Palouse are the teams to beat heading into the season, with defending state champion St. John-Endicott hoping to turn a young, inexperienced roster into a playoff-bound team. The Southeast league is notoriously tough, and SJE coach Joey McCanna said this year will be no different. Everybody in the league lost some key players to graduation, which will make for an interesting season. Returning all-league players on offense include quarterback Corey Horstman (Sr., Colton-Pullman Christian) and RB Terry Kissler (Sr., Sprague-Harrington). On defense, Prescott senior Colby Mayberry and junior lineman Juan Castillo (Touchet), are the only returning all-league players.

Although the Warriors graduated quarterback Greg Giese, Almira/Coulee-Hartline will make noise in the league. ACH entered the playoffs last season as the state’s top-ranked team but made a shocking exit when the Warriors lost to Touchet in the opening round of the state tournament. Key lineman Nate West returns and Jordan Hughes will be the go-to guy on offense for ACH. Odessa will likely be atop the league standing this season with players like receiver/linebacker Travis Todd carrying that pressure.
