NHL: Detroit rally beats Phoenix

Dan Cleary’s power-play goal completed host Detroit’s third-period comeback, and Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist to lift the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night.

Pavel Datsyuk also scored for NHL-leading Detroit, and Brian Rafalski had two assists. Chris Osgood made 24 saves.

Daniel Winnik, and Fredrik Sjostrom scored for Phoenix, and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 36 shots.

Blue Jackets 4, Flames 3 (OT): At Calgary, Alberta, rookie forward Curtis Glencross scored his second of the game 2:03 into overtime and Columbus beat the Flames.

Kris Russell’s dump-in was tracked down by Kris Beech, who blindly backhanded the puck from the corner into the slot. Glencross eluded the backcheck of Daymond Langkow and fired a shot past Miikka Kiprusoff.

Predators 5, Canadiens 4 (SO): At Montreal, Radek Bonk and Martin Erat scored in the shootout after Nashville erased a three-goal deficit, and the Predators beat the Canadiens.

Bonk, who tied the game with 46.8 seconds remaining in regulation, put a shot through Cristobal Huet’s pads on Nashville’s first shot and Erat put a shot over Huet’s glove to convert the Predators’ second attempt.

Capitals 2, Panthers 1: At Sunrise, Fla., Alexander Ovechkin scored the go-ahead goal from a severe angle, Brent Johnson stopped 24 shots and Washington snapped a three-game skid with a victory over Florida.

Stars 4, Flyers 1: At Philadelphia, Jussi Jokinen, Antti Miettinen, and Mike Ribeiro scored second-period goals to lead Dallas over Philadelphia.

Thrashers 4, Islanders 0: At Uniondale, N.Y., Kari Lehtonen turned aside 30 shots in his first NHL appearance in six weeks because of a groin injury, and Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and assist in Atlanta to victory against New York.

Lightning 4, Bruins 1: At Tampa, Fla., Vincent Lecavalier had two goals and an assist, helping the Lightning stop a six-game losing skid with a victory over Boston.

Maple Leafs 4, Penguins 2: At Toronto, Mark Bell and Jason Blake scored goals, and Mats Sundin broke an 83-year-old record as the Maple Leafs beat Pittsburgh. Sundin’s assist on Bell’s goal extended his point streak in home games from to a club-record 15.

Rangers 5, Senators 2: At Ottawa, Brendan Shanahan scored two goals and New York beat the Senators, handing the Eastern Conference champions their sixth straight loss. Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves for his league-leading 14th win.

Sabres 8, Hurricanes 1: At Buffalo, N.Y., Ales Kotalik had two goals, and Jaroslav Spacek had a goal and two assists to lift the Sabres over struggling Carolina.

Blues 3, Blackhawks 1: At St. Louis, Lee Stempniak scored for the second straight night and Hannu Toivonen stopped 17 shots in the Blues’ victory over Chicago.

Avalanche 5, Kings 2: At Los Angeles, Ryan Smyth broke open a tie game with a pair of third-period goals, and T.J. Hensick scored his first in the NHL, leading Colorado to victory over the Kings.

Wild’s Walz retires

Minnesota Wild center Wes Walz announced his retirement.

Walz career included 13 seasons and five teams, spanning 17 years, though he appeared in more games for Minnesota than anyone else in team history. The 37-year-old Walz played 438 of his 607 NHL games for Minnesota, finishing with 109 goals and 151 assists.
