Texas hands UCLA first loss

Damion James dunked with 8 seconds remaining to help No. 8 Texas upset second-ranked UCLA 63-61 at Los Angeles after the Longhorns blew all of a 16-point, first-half lead Sunday in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series.

James and D.J. Augustin finished with 19 points each, and the Longhorns (7-0) survived their closest game yet after winning their first six by at least 15 points. James also had 10 rebounds.

UCLA’s first loss of the season ended the Bruins’ 25-game home winning streak. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute had 14 points, and Darren Collison added 12 in his first start for the Bruins (7-1).

Mbah a Moute missed a 3-pointer in front of UCLA’s bench at the buzzer.

UCLA became the highest-ranked opponent Texas has beaten in a true road game in school history.

(4) Kansas 59, (22) USC 55: At Los Angeles, Mario Chalmers made a 3-pointer and a free throw in the final 20 seconds and the Jayhawks held off the Trojans.

Chalmers finished with 20 points and seven rebounds for Kansas (7-0), while freshman O.J. Mayo led the Trojans (6-2) with 19 points.

Arizona 78, (9) Texas A&M 67: At Tucson, Ariz., freshman Jerryd Bayless scored a season-high 26 points and the Wildcats rallied from a 20-point first-half deficit to hand the Aggies their first loss.

Bayless led Arizona (5-2) with six assists. Josh Carter scored 17 points for Texas A&M (7-1).

Women

(1) Tennessee 83, (4) North Carolina 79: At Knoxville, Tenn., Alexis Hornbuckle finished with 25 points and sank two free throws with 13.8 seconds remaining to seal the Lady Vols’ win over the Tar Heels.

Erlana Larkins led North Carolina (9-1) with 22 points and 15 rebounds, while Candace Parker had 21 points and 16 rebounds for Tennessee (6-0).

(6) Stanford 62, UC Davis 41: At Stanford, Calif., Candice Wiggins scored 19 points in helping the Cardinal (7-1) beat the Aggies (5-1).

(7) Georgia 71, Georgia Tech 64: At Athens, Ga., Ashley Houts made eight free throws in the final 1:31 to finish with 16 points, and the Lady Bulldogs (8-0) overcome 23 turnovers to defeat the Yellow Jackets (5-1).

(8) LSU 52, Tulane 36: At New Orleans, Sylvia Fowles scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help the Lady Tigers (6-2) cruise to an easy win over the Green Wave (6-2).

(9) Oklahoma 93, Arkansas State 36: At Norman, Okla., Courtney Paris had 22 points and 15 rebounds for her 67th straight double-double and the Sooners (4-2) routed the Indians (4-4).
