OUTHUNT

Mom says ‘Whoa’ to moose hunters

A North Idaho family is suffering from too much of a good thing this fall.

“You can put in for years and never draw a moose tag, so nobody expected all three of them to draw permits in the same season,” said Verna Swan of St. Maries.

Her husband, Matt, and 12-year-old son, Justin, drew coveted moose permits as well as Matt’s brother, Bob Swan of Kellogg.

Then they did the unthinkable. “They all filled their tags with bulls, and they’re having them mounted,” Verna said.

“We have meat coming out our ears. Our 19-year-old son already shot an elk, and we have a deer in the freezer, too. And we already have one moose head on the wall. I told them the wall isn’t big or strong enough for two more moose.

“Matt still has an elk tag. I said he can go out and scout and look all he wants, but unless it’s the big daddy all-time record Idaho elk trophy, he’d better not pull the trigger.”
