Hoyas win in rout
No fights and no forfeit.
Sunday’s game between Georgetown and Jacksonville went more according to script than the last time the teams met, with the No. 5 Hoyas dominating the slumping Dolphins 87-55 in Washington.
Freshman Austin Freeman scored 15 points to lead the Hoyas, who shot a season-high 59 percent and pulled away late in the first half to improve to 7-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season.
The Dolphins (3-6), who have lost six straight since opening the season 3-0, never had much of a chance to pull the kind of upset registered by Atlantic Sun brethren Gardner-Webb (over Kentucky) and Mercer (over Southern California) earlier this season.
The game was essentially decided by halftime, but at least the second half was actually played. That wasn’t the case on Dec. 18, 1969, when a punch thrown on the court led to fights in the stands at Jacksonville’s tiny Swisher Gymnasium with 2 minutes to play in the first half.
Both teams were sent to the locker room, the Hoyas refused to come out, and the game is recorded as a 41-26 Dolphins’ victory by forfeit in both teams’ media guides. Jacksonville immediately moved all its home games to Jacksonville Coliseum. Future NBA great Artis Gilmore, who had a double-double for the Dolphins when the game was halted, attended Sunday’s long-overdue rematch.
(25) Villanova 101, Temple 93: At Philadelphia, Scottie Reynolds scored 27 points and the Wildcats (7-1) made it a record 13 straight victories against their city series rivals with a win over the Owls (4-5).
Antonio Pena and Shane Clark both scored 17 points for the Wildcats. Villanova, which rallied from a 21-point deficit with 8:50 left to beat LSU on Thursday night, needed a second-half surge to take control against the Owls.
The Owls were the last Big 5 team to beat Villanova back on Dec. 4, 2004 at the Palestra and they had one of their largest home crowds in recent memory supporting them in a celebration for the 10th anniversary of the Liacouras Center.
Dionte Christmas had 20 points and 11 rebounds, Mark Tyndale scored 24 points, and Ryan Brooks had 22 for the Owls.
The Owls allowed 100 points for only the sixth time in team history and first since against Wake Forest in 1993.
