NHL : Brind’Amour scores in clutch for Hurricanes

Rod Brind’Amour banked a shootout shot in off the crossbar to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 6-5 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night in Philadelphia.

Brind’Amour’s goal came after teammates Matt Cullen and Jeffrey Hamilton traded tallies in the tiebreaker with Philadelphia’s Mike Richards and Joffrey Lupul.

Niclas Wallin, who also had an assist, Cullen, Eric Staal, and Trevor Letowski scored in regulation for the Southeast Division leaders, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Penguins 3, Islanders 2: At Uniondale, N.Y., Tyler Kennedy scored the winning goal and added two assists for Pittsburgh, which snapped a two-game losing streak and beat the Islanders.

Sidney Crosby and Ryan Whitney also scored for the Penguins, which got 27 saves from Dany Sabourin.

Stars 4, Sharks 2: At San Jose, Calif., Mike Ribeiro and Brenden Morrow each had a goal and an assist to lead Dallas to a victory over the Sharks.

San Jose racked up 31 penalty minutes, 19 stemming from an altercation between defenseman Craig Rivet and Stars center Steve Ott.

Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 1: At Montreal, Saku Koivu scored twice and Carey Price made 28 saves to lead the Canadiens to a win over Toronto.

Andrei Kostitsyn and Alex Kovalev also scored for Montreal, which had lost six straight at the Bell Centre.

Red Wings 5, Panthers 2: At Detroit, Dan Cleary and Brian Rafalski scored in a 1:04 span early in the third period to break a tie, and Valtteri Filppula converted one of the Red Wings’ two penalty shots in Detroit’s victory over Florida.

Rafalski added an assist, Pavel Datsyuk also had a goal and an assist, and Johan Franzen had a goal for the NHL-leading Red Wings.

Bruins 2, Blue Jackets 0: At Boston, Jeremy Reich scored his first NHL goal and Alex Auld stopped 32 shots for his first shutout with the Bruins, leading Boston to a win over Columbus.

The Bruins remained the only team to not lose consecutive regulation games despite getting only 18 shots.

Sabres 3, Blackhawks 1: At Buffalo, N.Y., Thomas Vanek had a goal and assist, and Ryan Miller made 26 saves to spoil Buffalo native Patrick Kane’s homecoming and help lift the Sabres to a win over Chicago.

Drew Stafford and Jason Pominville also scored, and Derek Roy added two assists for Buffalo, who won their third straight and fourth in five games.

Oilers 2, Canucks 1: At Edmonton, Alberta, Fernando Pisani scored the deciding goal in the shootout for the Oilers, who earned their third straight post-regulation win in a victory over Vancouver.

Edmonton moved back to the .500 mark for the first time since the fourth game of the season.

Coyotes 4, Devils 1: At Newark, N.J., Fredrik Sjostrom scored twice and Martin Hanzal had a goal and three assists to lead Phoenix over the Devils.

The loss ended the New Jersey’s five-game winning streak at home and was only their third loss in their last 13 games.

Senators 7, Thrashers 3: At Ottawa, Dany Heatley scored twice and Antoine Vermette had a goal and two assists in the Senators’ victory over Atlanta.

Nick Foligno, Chris Kelly, Joe Corvo and Andrej Meszaros also scored for Ottawa, which played their first home game in two weeks.

Wild 2, Kings 1: At Los Angeles, Josh Harding made 35 saves, Brian Rolston scored during a 5-on-3 power play, and Minnesota beat the Kings.

Marian Gaborik also scored for Minnesota.

Capitals 3, Lightning 2: At Tampa, Fla., Brian Pothier scored a power-play goal in the third period to help Washington beat the Lightning.

Thomas Fleischmann and David Steckel added goals, and Brent Johnson made 23 saves.

Avalanche 3, Predators 1: At Denver, Paul Stastny and Marek Svatos scored second-period goals to lead Colorado to a victory over Nashville.

Stastny has 29 points (11 goals and 18 assists) in the Avalanche’s 16 home games. Justin Leopold added his first goal of the season for the Avalanche.
