Parental guidance

The Spokesman-Review

Parents Council member Lisa P. writes the following:

“After my husband and I got married and before we had children, his mother asked me a question. It’s probably been about 13 years ago and yet I still remember that I was setting the table in her kitchen while we were visiting during the Thanksgiving holiday.

” ‘If your husband and child were drowning and you could only save one, which would it be?’

I don’t even think I hesitated in my answer. ‘My husband,’ I said.

” ‘No you wouldn’t,’ she responded.

“Little did I know at the time that she was exactly right. Having a child changes everything.”
