Duke too much for Albany

DeMarcus Nelson scored 23 points and No. 6 Duke (10-0) turned in a sharp offensive performance after an exam break to beat Albany (5-5) 111-70 on Monday night in Durham, N.C.

Reserve Jon Scheyer added 18 points for the Blue Devils , who shot 60 percent and quickly turned this game into a rout. Duke had five players score in double figures and hit 15 of 26 3-pointers, continuing its strong outside shooting of recent games.

Duke improved to 10-0 for the sixth time in eight seasons, while Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski earned his 785th career victory to move within a game of tying Lefty Driesell for sixth on the all-time list.

The Blue Devils’ biggest struggles came at the free throw line, where Duke went 20 of 34 (59 percent).

(10) Marquette 80, IPFW 56: At Milwaukee, Dominic James had 17 points and six assists and Wesley Matthews added 15 points as the Golden Eagles used their speedy, athletic guards to overwhelm the Mastodons.

Trailing by 11 points at halftime, IPFW, which got 13 points from Jaraun Burrows to match his season average, started with a quick 8-2 run, but came unraveled nearly as fast as Marquette answered with a 14-2 spurt to put the game out of reach.

Women

(2) Connecticut 97, South Carolina 39: At Storrs, Conn., Tina Charles had 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Huskies (8-0) routed the Gamecocks (7-3).

Ketia Swanier scored 15 points for UConn, which held the South Carolina to just one field goal in the final 11 minutes.

The Huskies also lost starting forward Kalana Greene to what team officials called a severe knee injury in the first half.

(3) North Carolina 82, Coastal Carolina 58: At Conway, S.C., LaToya Pringle had season highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Tar Heels (11-1) past the Lady Chanticleers (7-3).

Rashanda McCants had 18 points and Elana Larkins 14 points for North Carolina.

(7) Georgia 102, Mercer 45: At Athens, Ga., Danielle Taylor scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Bulldogs (10-0) to a rout of the in-state rival Bears (3-7).

Tasha Humphrey had 20 points for Georgia , but her string of double-doubles ended at six. Freshman Angela Puleo had a career-high 14 points, nine assists and four steals.

Top 25 rankings

With North Carolina No. 1 for the seventh consecutive week, the top 15 teams in the poll held their spots from last week. However, there was movement near the bottom of the rankings with three teams moving in, two for the first time this season.

Miami and West Virginia jumped into the poll at Nos. 22 and 24, respectively, while Southern California again returned to the rankings at No. 25, this time after being out of the poll for one week.

Gonzaga (9-2) climbed one spot to No. 18 while Washington State (9-0) stayed idle at No. 7.

Saint Mary’s (7-1) cracked the Top 25 last week for the first time since 1989. The Gaels dropped from No. 24 after losing 71-56 at Southern Illinois.
