GSL boys: Central Valley rallies past LC
Central Valley couldn’t contain Alex Gauper, but the Bears stopped just about everyone else Tuesday in rallying for a 51-41 Greater Spokane League boys basketball victory at Lewis and Clark.
It was the first loss for the Tigers (2-1), whose Gauper scored 26 points, 63 percent of their team total. The win pushed CV (4-3) above the .500 mark, just ahead of a pack clumped around fifth place.
The Bears fell behind early but worked their way back into the game by halftime. The score was tied at 24 early in the third quarter before LC took a four-point lead.
CV then ran off nine straight points, including the first seven of the fourth quarter, with Willie Davis making it 42-36 with his second 3-pointer of the game.
Neither team scored for a period of 2 minutes, 33 seconds, but the Bears controlled rebounding and defense inside with J.C. Agen and milked the game’s final 2:45.
“That’s how J.C. is capable of playing,” said coach Rick Sloan.
His team held LC scoreless for nearly six minutes while scoring nine straight points before Gauper ended the game with his third 3-pointer of the night.
“We’re a fairly deep team and a lot of times we can wear you out down the stretch,” said Sloan.
Davis scored 15 points and Michael Williams added a dozen for CV. Only four LC players scored, with Jordan Hanson adding 10.
Ferris 89, East Valley 34: The Saxons (7-0) welcomed back DeAngelo Casto to the fold, but it was an impressive showing of depth that enabled them to overwhelm the host Knights (0-6). A dozen Ferris players scored, led by Evan Ewing’s 13 and Beau Brett’s 10. The Saxons forced 26 EV turnovers, bolting to a 25-3 first-quarter lead and outscoring the hosts 44-13 in the second half.
Gonzaga Prep 61, Mead 50: The hot-shooting Bullpups (4-1) raced to a 22-10 first-quarter lead at home and it was enough to keep them third in the Greater Spokane League. Junior David Stockton was 7 for 11 from the field, including three 3-pointers, and finished with 20 points to lead four Bullpups in double figures. Inside, Ryan Nicholas (14 points) was 6 for 8 from the floor and Travis Long (12) was 5 for 6. The Panthers (1-5) got 21 points from Brendan Ingebritsen, moving him up to ninth all time among GSL scorers. Ingebritsen was 4 for 6 shooting 3-pointers.
University 54, Rogers 50: The Titans (3-3) evened their record in a taut game at the Pirates’ place. Tied in the fourth quarter, Andrew Pirttima and Mason Johnson each hit 3-pointers to keep Rogers (1-5) at bay. The hosts had rallied from a first-quarter deficit to outscore U-Hi 23-14 for a 31-27 lead at intermission. Pirttima equaled his career high of 17 points to lead the Titans. Daniel Anderson had a game-high 19 for the Pirates.
Shadle Park 48, North Central 39: Zack Humphrey had four 3-pointers and 19 points, 11 in the second half, when the Highlanders (5-1) broke a 20-all tie at intermission for victory at Spokane Falls Community College. Three Shadle players finished in double figures, including Aaron Dunn and Anthony Brown. NC’s Nick Rijon led all scorers with 20 points and David Butler added 10 for the Indians (3-3).
