Mead’s Mockel wins MVP

Karyn Mockel, the setter for the Mead volleyball team that won its fifth straight State 4A championship, was named MVP of the all-state team announced this week.

Volleyball and girls soccer all-state teams are coordinated by Rene Ferran of the Tri-City Herald and voted upon by sportswriters statewide.

Mockel and Panthers sophomore middle blocker Alexis Olgard were named to the 4A first team and Mead’s Judy Kight was Coach of the Year.

First-team selections in 1A were hitter Sadie Lazzarini and setter Abby Bruya from state champion Colfax and hitter Kelli Tikker from Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls). Colfax’s Sue Doering was Coach of the Year.

Maddisen Peterson from Wilbur-Creston was named a first-team hitter in 2B. State champion Tekoa-Oakesdale had two players and Coach of the Year Kaci Tee in 1B.

For T-O, middle blocker Shelby Puckett was MVP and a first-team hitter and Lauren Varney was libero. Kaprina Goodwin from Northport was also a first-team hitter.

Soccer first-team all-state players include Marissa Mykines, a midfielder from Mead, and Shadle Park defender Ali Fenter.

Numerous other volleyball and soccer players from the area earned second-team and honorable mention honors. See Scoreboard for list of local athletes selected.
