Youthful Bullpups handle CV

Gonzaga Prep’s basketball youth movement continues to steamroll along.

The Bullpups (5-1), with only two seniors on the roster, overran visiting Central Valley (4-4) 72-43 Friday night to remain firmly among the Greater Spokane League’s top three teams.

It was the fourth time this year G-Prep has scored more than 70 points in a game.

CV had won three straight and four of five before running afoul of the big G-Prep lineup.

Gonzaga burst to a 20-10 lead after a quarter and outscored the Bears 39-20 in the second half.

Ryan Nicholas is one of three sophomores on the team and one of four players standing 6-foot-4 or taller. The 6-6 post scored 14 points and with physical 6-5 junior Travis Long, helped control things inside. Long scored 13.

G-Prep hit 57 percent of its shots from the field and was 15 of 16 from the line. Junior guard Sean Fischer added 12 points.

The Bears had trouble scoring against their taller foe. Only one player, Michael Williams, scored more than six points. Williams finished with 10.

Ferris 75, North Central 50: The unbeaten Saxons (7-0) rolled once more, outscoring the host Indians 35-14 in the first half and adding 27 more points in the third quarter.

Guards Jeff Minnerly, with eight, and Erick Cheadle, with six, and post DeAngelo Casto, also with six, accounted for most of the third-period scoring. Minnerly led the offense with 15 points and Cheadle had 13. Jared Karstetter added 14 points as Ferris had six players with eight or more. Nick Rijon scored 14 points and Nathan Pelton 12 for NC (3-4).

Shadle Park 58, Lewis and Clark 46: A hot start fueled by Anthony Brown carried the visiting Highlanders (6-1) to victory over the Tigers (2-2).

Brown scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter when Shadle bolted to an 18-6 lead. The Highlanders then put the game on cruise control, with both teams playing on even terms the rest of the way.

Aaron Dunn added 13 points to the Highlanders’ cause and Zack Humphrey scored 11. Both Brown and Humphrey had three 3-pointers. Five Tigers divided up the points, led by Alex Gauper with 10.

Mt. Spokane 56, University 45: The on-again, off-again Wildcats (3-3) were on at home against the Titans (3-4). They outscored U-Hi 18-6 in the second quarter to take control and were ahead by 14 points after three quarters.

Jordan Poynor hit three 3-pointers on the way to 17 points and Connor Haley scored 11 of his 13 in the second half to lead the way. Ryan Selland added 11 points. Ryan Dixon scored 11 and Mason Johnson 10 for the Titans.

Rogers 77, East Valley 61: Jesse Vaughan had the hot hand for the Pirates, who won for the second time with their highest offensive total.

Vaughn, scored a career-high 29, including 11 of 11 free throws.

Rogers (2-5) jumped to a 21-8 first-quarter lead at EV (0-7) and had 40 points by halftime.

Steady Daniel Anderson added 12. The Pirates shot 50 percent from the field and were 26 of 36 from the free throw line. Lonnie Quirk scored 11 and Shawn Crowley 10 to lead the Knights.
