In brief: American hospitalized after giant slalom run
Denise Karbon of Italy won her third straight giant slalom Friday at Lienz, Austria, in a World Cup race in which Julia Mancuso of the United States finished second and teammate Resi Stiegler crashed and broke her arm and shin.
Stiegler, America’s giant slalom national champion, was hospitalized with a broken left forearm and right shinbone, torn ligaments in the right knee and a bruised face and hip after her spill halfway down the course. She will undergo surgery in the U.S. and be sidelined for two months.
Karbon led after the first leg and was fastest in the final run to finish in 2 minutes, 2.73 seconds. Mancuso was 1.28 seconds behind.
“Austrian skier Hans Grugger will miss the rest of the World Cup season after surgery on his left knee.

Head referee named
Longtime college and NFL referee David Parry will be the first national coordinator of college football officiating.
Parry, coordinator of football officials for the Big Ten, will oversee national training programs for referees, assign and evaluate postseason officiating crews, and coordinate national meetings of the referees.
“Southern Illinois introduced Dale Lennon as its new coach, handing the former North Dakota coach a program that came one victory short of the Football Championship Subdivision title game this season. Lennon signed a five-year deal for $200,000 a year.
“Kentucky receiver Keenan Burton was given a 50-50 chance of playing against Florida State in the Music City Bowl. The star wideout is dealing with a knee injury.

“Tab Thacker, an NCAA championship wrestler who appeared in two “Police Academy” films and other Hollywood movies, died in Raleigh, N.C. after several years of declining health, according to North Carolina State University. He was 45.
“The former agent for disgraced sprinter Marion Jones has been suspended by USA Track & Field for two years. The penalty dates to March 22, when Charles Wells pleaded guilty to bank fraud in a money laundering case that also ensnared Jones, her ex-boyfriend, sprinter Tim Montgomery, and her former coach, Steve Riddick.
“Patrick Valenzuela, whose career has been marred by a history of substance abuse and suspensions, has been stripped of his conditional jockey license by California after being arrested on suspicion of DUI.
