Manning stand-in a stand-up guy

Simple Super Bowl question: Who’s Peyton Manning’s backup for the Indianapolis Colts?

Honest answer from defensive end Mark Anderson of the Chicago Bears: “I don’t know.”

Who would?

His name is Jim Sorgi, in case you’re wondering. He is a three-year veteran from Wisconsin with a good sense of humor. Good thing.

Mention how the home crowds at the RCA Dome include a sea of Manning’s No. 18 jerseys. “There are some No. 12s. I have six or seven family members at every game. It’s kind of like playing ‘Where’s Waldo?’ Look around and you can find them, but it’ll take awhile.”

Huskies schedule adjusted again

Tyrone Willingham’s third season at Washington will kick off on a Friday night.

The Huskies announced Thursday that their season opener at Syracuse has been moved from Saturday, Sept. 1, to Friday, Aug. 31, so the game can be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

This is the latest in a series of changes to the Huskies’ 2007 schedule. Two weeks ago, the 100th Apple Cup was moved back a week so both Washington and Washington State could schedule a bye in the middle of the season. The Huskies also added a 13th game, at Hawaii on Dec. 1.

Could have used Wheaties vs. GU

Roy Williams had better eat his Wheaties, especially now that the cereal is paying tribute to the coach’s storied North Carolina basketball program.

The cereal called “Breakfast of Champions” unveiled a box celebrating the Tar Heels’ basketball program on Wednesday. The box – released regionally – features the interlocking “NC” logo on the front along with a picture of the Smith Center court, North Carolina’s home for 21 years.

On the back, it notes that the Tar Heels have won five national championships – four NCAA tournament titles and the 1924 Helms Foundation championship – as well as 15 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament titles.
