Wrestling: University leads in 4A districts
University built a 35-point lead over rival Central Valley after the first day of the District 8 4A tournament at Mead Friday.
The Titans, ranked No. 7 in the state in the most recent poll of the state’s coaches, hold a 154-119 lead over the rival Bears through the quarterfinal round.
The top two seeds in each weight classification advanced into today’s semifinal round.
U-Hi has 15 wrestlers still alive in the championship division, with two wrestlers in the semifinals at 125, 171 and 285 pounds, with Titans Ben Borgman and top-seeded Greg Mitchell facing each other in a 171 semifinal.
CV has a dozen wrestlers still alive, with two, Chase Ferrozzo and Tyler Simmet, looking to unseat top seeds Anthony Rivera of U-Hi and Phillip Smith of Mead at 119 pounds.
The top four finishers per weight advance to next week’s Eastern Regional tournament at U-Hi.
“Eleven East Valley wrestlers advanced to the semifinals and the host Knights lead Eastmont by nearly 30 points after the first two rounds of the 3A subregional tournament at EV.
The upset of the day for EV came at 152 when Billy Cabbage pinned Big 9 No. 1 seed Alex Prewett of Kennewick in 5 minutes, 40 seconds.
Cabbage will meet North Central’s Mike Pursel, who beat Spencer Marrott of Southridge 7-0.
Mt. Spokane is in sixth place while NC is seventh out of 10 teams.
