“Two area students were recently named Eagle Scouts, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts. Kyle Sherman and Ben Smith are members of Troop 218.
Sherman, a senior at Mead High School, is the son of Rick and Teresa Sherman. He built a cross with backlighting and installed it at Covenant United Methodist Church for his project.
Smith, also a senior at Mead High School, is the son of Mike and Kyle Smith. He refurbished the church sign at Covenant United Methodist Church for his project.
“Two area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Raymond Jennings, a 1996 graduate of Central Valley High School, is the son of Darlene Canaday of Veradale.
Air Force Airman Patrick Merwin, the son of Anthony Merwin of Bonney Lake, Wash., and April Merwin of Addy, Wash., is a 2006 graduate of Sumner High School, Sumner, Wash.
“Four Spokane Sector Border Patrol agents were recently given awards at the 2006 Customs and Border Protection Commissioner’s annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Senior Patrol Agent Christopher Jarvis of the Whitefish Border Patrol Station received the Top Humanitarian Award for saving a drowning child while on vacation in Utah. Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Kolo Moser and Senior Border Patrol Agents Vincent Clark and Michael Egerton of the Oroville Border Patrol Station received the CBP Ambassador Award for Community Outreach for supporting a Border Patrol Explorer Post in Oroville, Wash.
“Sarah Ferris recently graduated from Western Washington University magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in education. Ferris, a 2002 graduate of University High School, is the daughter of Abraham and Barbara Ferris of Spokane.
“Victoria Howie has been awarded an Academic Achievement Scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year at Northwest College, Iowa. The amount ranges from $1,000 to $3,499. Howie, a senior at Ferris High School, is the daughter of Richard and Wanda Howie.
“Donald Nelson of Spokane was recently named to the fall 2006 dean’s list at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn.
“Three area students were recently awarded a $500 Roland and Marian Lewis Scholarship for the 2006-2007 academic year at Eastern Washington University. The award is given to graduate students with a major in education.
Heather Jordan, the daughter of Carol and Joel Rell of Spokane, is a 1990 graduate of Gonzaga Prep.
Gina Naccarato, 1988 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, is the daughter of Michael and Jan Naccarato of Spokane.
Renee Rinderknecht of Spokane is a 1971 graduate of Benton Community College in VanHorne, Iowa.
“Four area students have been named to the fall 2006 dean’s list at Eastern Oregon University. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher to be named to the list. They are: Robert Barker of Post Falls and Salena Leavitt, Whitney Parker and Mary Passmore of Spokane.
“Emily Goodner was recently awarded a $1,000 Jeffers Chertok Scholarship for the 2006-2007 academic year at Eastern Washington University. Goodner, a 1999 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, is the daughter of Tracy and Barbara Smith.

“Four local students were named Student of the Month at Timberlake High School. Seventh-grader Shelby Swann is the daughter of Wendy Swann of Spirit Lake. Seventh-grader J.D. Page is the son of David and Phyllis Page of Athol.
Eighth-grader Kaitlyn Kinsall is the daughter of MaLanai and Scott Loros of Spirit Lake. Eighth-grader Matt Spraktes is the son of Mary and David Spraktes of Athol.
“Patrice Wheeler was recently given the 2006 Disability Rights Advocate Award from the city of Coeur d’Alene and the Disability Action Center in the professional category. Wheeler is the assistive technology access specialist for North Idaho College’s Center for Educational Access.
