In brief: Beckham will hit all MLS cities and a TV near you

David Beckham will visit every Major League Soccer city after his U.S. arrival in mid-July, and television viewers will see lots of him.

The former England captain likely will make his MLS debut Aug. 5 at Toronto, according to the MLS schedule released Tuesday. But he could don his Galaxy shirt for the first time in late July when Los Angeles plays in the SuperLiga, an eight-team exhibition event between MLS and Mexican clubs.

Sixteen of the Los Angeles Galaxy’s final 17 games are scheduled to be broadcast nationally.

“Flavio Ortega, the coach of the Honduras national team, died from the effects of a brain aneurism in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He was 62.

“New York Red Bulls forward Mike Magee is will be sidelined up to four months after surgery on his right knee.

Dorrell gets extension

UCLA coach Karl Dorrell, whose Bruins finished the season 7-6 but beat Southern California for the first time in eight years, has been given a one-year extension, putting him under contract through the 2011 season.

The 43-year-old Dorrell, who has a 29-21 record in four seasons at UCLA, signed a five-year contract in July that included an $850,000 salary and incentives up to another $505,000 annually.

“Gordon Reise, the Pacific-10 Conference replay official who blew a call during the Oklahoma-Oregon game last season, has been told he will not return to the job in that capacity.

“Former Iowa State coach Dan McCarney was hired as assistant head coach and defensive line coach at South Florida.

Burdette dies at 80

Lew Burdette, Most Valuable Player of the 1957 World Series when he pitched the Milwaukee Braves to their only championship, has died at 80 after an extended battle with lung cancer in Winter Garden, Fla.

A two-time All-Star and a member of the Braves’ Hall of Fame, the righty was 203-144 with a 3.66 ERA from 1950-67. He also pitched a no-hitter.

“Right-hander Aaron Harang and the Cincinnati Reds avoided arbitration by agreeing to a four-year, $36.5 million contract.

“Outfielder Eric Byrnes and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a one-year contract worth $4,575,000.

“Right-hander Todd Wellemeyer and the Kansas City Royals agreed to a $635,000, one-year contract.

Olympic medalist dies

Willye White, a five-time U.S. Olympian and two-time Olympic silver medalist, died at 67 of pancreatic cancer at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in her hometown of Chicago.

“Patrick Staudacher of Italy was the surprise winner of the men’s super-G race while Anja Paerson of Sweden won her second straight world title in the women’s super-giant slalom at the Alpine Skiing World Championships in Are, Sweden.

“Olympic champion and outdoor world record-holder Liu Xiang won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.53 seconds at the Duesseldorf indoor track meet in Germany.
