Top 25 women: Duke wins 1 vs. 2 battle

Abby Waner scored six of her 16 points during a key second-half spurt, and No. 1 Duke held off No. 2 North Carolina 64-53 Thursday night at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Wanisha Smith had all 17 of her points in the first half, Lindsey Harding added 16 points and Alison Bales had 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils (25-0, 10-0 ACC).

Duke overcame second-half foul trouble and held off the Tar Heels at every critical juncture, improving to 8-0 against ranked teams and snapping a five-game losing streak to North Carolina.

Camille Little scored a season-high 21 points and Erlana Larkins had 14 rebounds for the Tar Heels (24-1, 8-1), but star point guard Ivory Latta finished with just nine points on 3-of-20 shooting and missed all 11 of her 3-point attempts.

(3) Tennessee 72, Auburn 62: At Auburn, Ala., Candace Parker had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Vols (22-2, 9-0 SEC) to a victory over the Tigers (17-9, 4-5).

(4) Ohio State 70, Minnesota 67: At Minneapolis, Marscilla Packer had 18 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer, to lead the Buckeyes (22-1, 11-0) past the Gophers (13-12, 5-7) for their 28th consecutive Big Ten win.

(6) Maryland 78, Virginia Tech 59: At College Park, Md., Kristi Toliver scored 19 points and the Terrapins (23-3, 7-3 ACC) coasted past the Hokies (16-10, 5-5).

(7) LSU 79, Florida 66: At Baton Rouge, La., Quianna Chaney scored 14 points, highlighted by her personal 7-0 run late in the second half, to help the Lady Tigers (22-3, 8-2 SEC) pull away from the Gators (6-19, 0-10).

(8) George Washington 76, Duquesne 46: At Washington, Jessica Adair had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and the Colonials (20-2, 9-0 Atlantic 10) ran their winning streak to 13 games with a victory over the Dukes (7-15, 2-8).

(9) Georgia 92, Alabama 51: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Christy Marshall scored a career-high 17 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ (20-5, 7-3 SEC) victory over the Crimson Tide (10-15, 0-10).

(10) Arizona St 61, Oregon 48: At Tempe, Ariz., Aubree Johnson (Post Falls) scored 17 points and the Sun Devils (22-3, 12-2 Pac-10) beat the Ducks (13-10, 5-8).

(13) Purdue 69, Illinois 57: At West Lafayette, Ind., Katie Gearlds scored 24 points to help the Boilermakers (21-4, 10-1 (Big Ten) beat the Fighting Illini (16-7, 6-5).

(25) James Madison 76, Va. Commonwealth 63: At Richmond, Va., Meredith Alexis had 26 points and 13 rebounds, lifting the Dukes (21-2, 12-0 Colonial Athletic Association) to a victory over the Rams (11-11, 4-8).
