Cardinals roll foes at Region 18
North Idaho College landed two first-place wrestlers and had six runner-up finishers, scoring 172 points en route to a top finish at Saturday’s Region 18 tournament in Yakima.
No. 1 seeds Evan Mattingly (197) and Heinrich Barnes (141) led the Cardinals, scoring top finishes in their respective weight brackets.
Kyle Sand (184), Brett Owen (174), Dino May (165), Lee Morrison (157), Cody Jones (149) and Brandon Palaniuk (133) all recorded second-place finishes for the Cardinals, who will compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament Feb. 23-24 in Rochester, Minn.
Rob Shaw (HWT) pinned Highline’s Roy Chambers to place third.
Southwestern Oregon finished a distant second to the Cardinals with 128.5 points. They were followed by Clackamas (116.5), Highline (86), Pima (77.5) and Yakima (63.5).
Baseball
Nick Salotti went 3 for 4 with four RBIs including a pair of doubles, to lead UC Riverside past Gonzaga 11-4 in a non-conference game at the Sports Complex in Riverside, Calif.
James Simmons earned the win for the Highlanders (5-0), allowing one run on one hit, while striking out five in six innings.
Ryan Wiegand provided the Bulldog (0-5) offense, going 2 for 4, including a bases-clearing, three-run double in the top of the eighth.
Track and field
A number of local competitors turned in strong performances at the Husky Classic Indoor meet in Seattle.
Idaho’s Russ Winger won the men’s shot put with a toss of 65 feet, 2 inches.
Benjamin Mimoun finished second in the 200-meter run with a personal-best 21.97 seconds.
Washington State’s Tyson Byers reached pole vault of 17-5 to tie for fourth.
Eastern Washington’s Steve Keith, Brandon Keeler and Chad Butorac performed well enough to qualify for the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championship.
Keith and Keeler qualified in the 60 with times of 7.20 and 7.41, respectively. Butorac qualified with a time of 22.31 in the 200 and a 48.86 in the 400.
Washington State’s Diana Pickler took second place in the 60 hurdles and high jump with personal bests of 8.26 and 5-10 1/2, respectively.
Eastern Washington’s Camille Moseley ran a time of 10:05.51 in the 3,000, qualifying her for the BSC Indoor Championship.
Swimming
Linfield College stayed on top in the men’s team scoring and Puget Sound women took over first place at the Northwest Conference championships in Walla Walla.
Heading into the final day, the Whitworth men trail Linfield by 17 points, and the Whitworth women trail Puget Sound by 52. Both Pirates teams sit in second place.
Whitworth’s Samantha Kephart won the 100-yard butterfly for a third consecutive year and Natalie Turner set an NWC record in winning the 200 freestyle. The duo also helped the Pirates win the 800 freestyle relay for the second consecutive year.
Whitworth’s David Dolphany defended his title in the 200 freestyle.
Junior hockey
Evan Witt scored two goals and added four assists to lead Spokane past the visiting Kimberley Dynamiters 7-5 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
The Braves play their final regular-season home game at 2 p.m. today against Nelson.
