Mountaineers upset Bruins
Alex Ruoff scored 18 points and West Virginia withstood two rallies by No. 2 UCLA in the second half to beat the Bruins 70-65 Saturday in non-conference play at Morgantown, W.Va.
For the second straight season, UCLA (21-3) couldn’t recover from a double-digit deficit against the Mountaineers (19-5). All three UCLA losses have come on the road this season. This was the first to a non-conference opponent.
Arron Afflalo had 27 points and nine rebounds for UCLA.
(1) Florida 64, (20) Kentucky 61: At Lexington, Ky., Corey Brewer scored 16 points and the Gators (23-2, 10-0 SEC) held off the Wildcats (18-6, 7-3) for their 16th straight victory.
Ramel Bradley missed a 3-pointer that could have tied it as time expired, sealing the Gators’ fifth win in a row against Kentucky.
(3) Ohio State 63, Purdue 56: At Columbus, Ohio, Ron Lewis hit a key driving layup and the Buckeyes (22-3, 10-1 Big Ten) overcame Greg Oden’s foul trouble, closing on an 11-4 run to hold off the Boilermakers (16-9, 5-6).
David Teague led the Boilermakers with 17 points, and Carl Landry added 13.
(4) Wisconsin 73, Iowa 62: At Madison, Wis., Alando Tucker scored 21 points to lead the Badgers (24-2, 10-1 Big Ten) to a win over the Hawkeyes (14-11, 6-5).
Tucker’s first basket of the game made him just the second player to score 2,000 points for Wisconsin, joining Michael Finley, who had 2,147 for his career.
(5) North Carolina 104, Wake Forest 67: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Reyshawn Terry scored 23 points, Tyler Hansbrough added 16 and the Tar Heels (22-3, 8-2 ACC) routed the Demon Deacons (11-13, 2-9).
(6) Texas A&M 66, Nebraska 55: At Lincoln, Neb., Josh Carter hit eight 3-pointers and matched his career high with 26 points, leading the Aggies (21-3, 9-1 Big 12) to a victory over the Cornhuskers (14-9, 3-6).
Aggies star Acie Law, who averaged 19.9 points in his previous 10 games, was held to nine – ending a streak of 15 games in double figures.
(7) Pittsburgh 74, Providence 68: At Pittsburgh, Aaron Gray took control inside to finish with 22 points after sitting out much of the first half in foul trouble, and the Panthers (22-3, 10-1 Big East) rallied in the second half to defeat the Friars (15-8, 5-5).
(8) Memphis 95, Tulane 51: At Memphis, Tenn., Robert Dozier and Willie Kemp each scored 13 points to lead a balanced offense, and the Tigers (21-3, 11-0 C-USA) beat the Green Wave (11-11, 4-6) for their 27th consecutive victory at home and 13th consecutive overall.
(9) Kansas 92, Missouri 74: At Columbia, Mo., Julian Wright set a career high with 33 points to go with 12 rebounds, and the Jayhawks (21-4, 8-2 Big 12) held the Tigers (14-9, 3-7) without a basket for more than 9 minutes of the first half in the victory.
Wright State 77, (10) Butler 65: At Dayton, Ohio, DaShaun Wood scored 30 points, leading the Raiders (19-9, 12-2 Horizon League) to a victory that ended the Bulldogs’ (23-3, 11-2) winning streak at nine games.
(15) Air Force 60, New Mexico 51: At Albuquerque, N.M., Jacob Burtschi and Nick Welch combined for a rare four-point trip late in the game as the Falcons (21-4, 8-3 MWC) shook off a horrendous start to beat the Lobos (14-11, 3-7).
(17) Oklahoma State 93, Texas Tech 91 (2OT): At Stillwater, Okla., Mario Boggan had 35 points and 14 rebounds as the Cowboys (19-5, 5-4 Big 12) won their third multiple-overtime game this season, beating the Red Raiders (15-10, 4-6).
Mississippi 75, (18) Alabama 69: At Oxford, Miss., Clarence Sanders scored 11 of Mississippi’s final 12 points to cap a rousing comeback as the Rebels (16-8, 5-5 SEC) beat the Crimson Tide (18-6, 5-5).
(21) Southern Illinois 72, Creighton 68: At Carbondale, Ill., Matt Shaw scored 25 points, including two key free throws with 1.6 seconds left, to help the Salukis (21-5, 12-3) hold off the Bluejays (17-8, 11-4) and take over sole possession of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference.
(22) Georgetown 76, (11) Marquette 58: At Washington, Roy Hibbert and Jeff Green combined for 47 points and Georgetown (18-5, 8-2 Big East) celebrated the 100th anniversary of Hoyas basketball with a victory over the Golden Eagles (21-5, 8-3).
Tennessee 84, (23) Vanderbilt 57: At Knoxville, Tenn., Wayne Chism scored 17 points, Chris Lofton added 16 and the Volunteers (17-8, 5-5) stormed out to a big lead and rolled past the Commodores (16-8, 6-4).
