Republic downs Northwest Christian

Derek Gianukakis scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Cody Groth added 13 points and nine boards Saturday as Republic used a fourth-quarter rally to beat Northwest Christian 42-37 in the championship of the District 7 2B tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.

The Tigers (23-1) converted on 13 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter and outscored the Crusaders 17-8 to earn the win.

Joe Grewe and Matt Zanbergen scored nine points apiece to lead NWC (23-1).

Republic advances to the District 7/9 regional tournament Saturday as the top seed. The Crusaders are No. 2.

In other playoff action at SFCC, Lane Salsbury scored a game-high 17 points and Aaron Weis added 13 points and 18 rebounds as Liberty (19-5) routed Wellpinit (14-11) 65-46. The Lancers are the third seed into regionals and the Redskins are No. 4. … Henry Butler scored a game-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting as St. George’s (17-7) topped Selkirk (16-8) 52-44. Nathan Reed tallied a team-high 12 points for the Rangers. The Dragons advance to the regional tournament as the fifth seed. Selkirk is No. 6.

District 7 1B

Austin Mannick led four players in double figures with 14 points and added a game-high 17 rebounds as Curlew (14-8) topped visiting Odessa (6-15) 61-49 to earn a spot in the championship game. Dillon Strandberg and Bernard Payne added 12 points for the Cougars, who will meet Almira/Coulee-Hartline in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday in Deer Park. Drake Costlow tallied a game-high 22 points for the Tigers, who will play St. Michael’s at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in Riverside. … Jared Campbell scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Cusick (10-12) whipped visiting Columbia 54-32. The Panthers advance to play Inchelium at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in Deer Park. The Lions (0-21) are finished for the season. … Ben Czapla’s layup with 2.7 seconds left gave St. Michael’s (8-14) a 54-53 win over visiting Northport (3-18). Czapla finished with a game-high 39 points. Tucker Guglielmino tallied a team-high 19 points for the Mustangs, who are finished for the season. … Greg Giese scored a game-high 31 points on 12-of-17 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds as Almira/Coulee-Hartline (9-12) whipped Inchelium (9-12) 71-47 in Hartline. Donny Carson tallied a game-high 19 points for the Hornets.

Whitman County tourney

Casey Cook scored a game-high 18 points and Kelly Cook added 14 as Tekoa-Oakesdale (17-4) edged St. John-Endicott (11-11) 46-44 in Endicott. The Eagles missed three shots in the final 10 seconds while trying to tie the game. The Nighthawks advance to 1B District tournament Monday in Walla Walla as the Whitman County No. 1 seed. St. John-Endicott is No. 2. … Jeremy Miller scored a game-high 14 points, leading LaCrosse-Washtucna (9-14) past Touchet 36-32 and into the district tournament. With the Tigercats leading 33-32, Jared Ayers-Stamper converted on a three-point play to give LaCrosse-Washtucna the lead for good. The fifth-seeded Tigercats will play No. 1 Tekoa-Oakesdale in Walla Walla at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Great Northern League

Kevin McNeil scored a game-high 21 points and Richie Mullenburg added 20 points and seven rebounds as Deer Park (9-9, 6-6) topped visiting Cheney (7-11, 4-8) 61-45. The Stags outscored the Blackhawks 34-17 in the second half. Griffon Jones tallied a team-high 18 points for Cheney. … Drew Hansen and Sean Bernier scored 18 points each as Clarkston (8-10, 8-4) whipped host Colville (8-10, 4-8) 81-56. Don Perconti added 16 points for the Bantams, who outscored the Indians 42-24 in the second half. Skyler Dumas led Colville with 16 points. … The regular season concludes next week.
