Hayman, Carver lead Wallace to victory
Cara Hayman’s terrific play continued Friday at the State 1A tournament at Columbia High School in Nampa.
Hayman scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and added four rebounds and four assists, leading Wallace past Council 67-49 and into the consolation championship.
Hayman tallied a game-high 33 points in Thursday’s 62-45 win over Cascade.
Lisa Carver tossed in 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Krista Williams added 14 points, eight rebounds and five steals for the Miners (14-11), who outscored the Lumberjacks by 10 in the first quarter and never looked back.
Myranda Wheeler chipped in eight points off the bench for Wallace.
Free-throw shooting proved to be a good asset for the Miners. Wallace shot 19 of 27 from the free-throw line while Council was just 2 of 7.
The Miners will meet Prairie in the consolation game today to determine fifth and eighth places.
Council finished the season 18-9.
In other tournament action in Nampa, Prairie outscored Kootenai 29-4 in the second and third quarters and beat the Warriors 49-36. Kootenai (19-5) jumped ahead 15-8 in the first quarter, but the Pirates answered by outscoring the Warriors 14-3 in the second. The game was out of reach for Kootenai after the third quarter, as Prairie outscored the Warriors 15-1 to take an 18-point lead into the fourth. Hannah Nyrop and Cassie Scheffelmaier scored 11 points apiece to lead Kootenai, which went cold in the second half, converting on just six of their 29 field-goal attempts The Warriors shot 27.1 percent from the floor while the Pirates shot 37.5 percent. Emily Frank added nine points and seven rebounds, including five offensive, for Kootenai. Prairie will face Wallace in the consolation game today while Kootenai is finished for the season.
