WSU’s Woods has record-setting day
Washington State’s Justin Woods won two events and set a meet record in the 200-meter dash Friday night at the 32nd annual Vandal Indoor track and field meet in Moscow, Idaho.
Woods won the 60 meters in 6.79 seconds and clocked 21.23 in the 200 to become one of two double winners – the other being Cougars teammate McKenzie Garberg, who claimed the women’s shot put (49 feet, 7 1/4 inches) and discus (156-7).
Three other meet records fell. Idaho’s Matthew Wauters increased the men’s weight throw record by nearly a foot with a 68-5 1/4 spin. Former WSU pole vaulter Tamara Diles pushed her meet mark to 14-0. WSU’s Princess Joy Griffey clocked 24.46 in the 200.
Baseball
Ricardo Gates had two hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning, as Cal State Northridge beat Washington State 5-3 in the Cougars’ season-opener at Matador Field in Northridge, Calif.
The Cougars went ahead 3-2 in the sixth inning when Nick Hall was walked with the bases loaded, but the Metadors answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning. CSN (8-4) added a run in both the seventh and eighth inning to close out the scoring. WSU (0-1) knocked out six hits.
Swimming
Idaho jumped into sixth place at the Western Athletic Conference championship meet in San Antonio.
The best performances of the day for the Vandals came from veterans Jo Jo Miller and Kacie Hogan.
In the opening finals, Miller placed third in the 400-yard individual medley and broke an Idaho school record with a time of 4 minutes, 31.25 seconds.
Hogan also broke a school record with a time of 56.18 in the 100 backstroke, finishing third.
The meet concludes today with the preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m. and the finals at 4:30 p.m.
