A day of bests at McDonald’s Open
A number of local track and field participants found success at Saturday’s McDonald’s Open at Moscow, Idaho.
La Shawnda Porter led a pack of Cougar women who swept the top four spots in the 200-meter dash. Porter ran a season-best time of 24.93 to beat out Brandi-Probasco-Canda’s mark of 25.07.
Idaho’s Molly Burt captured the women’s 60 hurdles with a mark of 9.07, and Lindsey Goodman hit a personal-best in the long jump to win the event with a leap of 17-81/4.
Eastern Washington swept the top two spots in the women’s 60 dash, with Crystal Williams (8.01) and Krystal Deyo (8.07) placing first and second, respectively.
WSU’s Robert Williams won the men’s 60 hurdles in a time of 8.42. Jaycee Robertson placed first in the 200 dash at 21.35 and second in the 60 dash at 6.81, behind the 6.79 from former All-American Cougar Anthony Buchanan.
Idaho’s Ben Wood threw 54-8 in the weight throw to finish second overall and tops among collegiate competitors. .
Eastern Washington’s Jason Kirk took the 400 dash with a mark of 50.09 to edge out WSU’s Devin Timpson at 50.15.
Baseball
Fresman Josh Ashenbrenner recorded four hits to lead an 18-hit attack, as Washington State picked up its first win of the season with a 12-10 non-conference win over Cal State Northridge (8-5) in Northridge, Calif.
Greg Lagreid added two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and Jeff Miller picked up three hits for the Cougars (1-1).
•Darin Holcomb scored two runs, but Gonzaga (2-6) fell to Missouri (5-1) 10-3 during the second day of the Coca-Cola Spring Training Classic in Surprise, Ariz.
•Whitworth opened its season by dropping a pair of non-conference games at Lewiston, Idaho.
The Pirates fell to Albertson in the opening contest 8-2, and were trumped in the second game by Lewis-Clark State 9-2.
Swimming
Idaho’s swim team wrapped up the WAC Swimming and Diving Championship with a sixth place finish in San Antonio.
Nevada captured its first title by fending off runner-up Hawaii.
