Bulldogs will be all right

The Spokesman-Review

What I found most disturbing last Monday night was not our boys’ heartbreaking loss to Santa Clara. It was the dull thud of S-R writer John Blanchette’s fall off the bandwagon seemingly at halftime.

He couldn’t wait to spew his condescending opinions upon us. What he said was that the Zags aren’t good enough and the absence of Josh Heytvelt has nothing to do with it. In other words, even had Josh played, they still would have lost because they simply aren’t good enough.

Blanchette ignores the fact that exactly a month ago Gonzaga beat the Broncos by eight, at their house, no less. By the way, he must have forgotten Josh didn’t start that game and scored only 12 points in a short 21 minutes. Furthermore, this team will have played five of the top 13 after Saturday’s game and other ranked teams at the time such as Duke, Texas, Washington, Virginia, etc. If you wanted some class, you had to go to Broncos coach Dick Davey, who had it right when he acknowledged the Zags were down a little and his team had more than a little luck.

This sportswriter needs to realize Gonzaga will be all right, and so will we fans. And we will give our full-throated, hoarse voices to the Bulldogs through the rest of the season, however long it lasts, even without his support.

I shudder to think what he’ll write if the Cougs lose a game or two.
