ASU snaps 15-game losing streak, tops USC
Jeff Pendergraph had 14 points and 15 rebounds as the Arizona State men (7-19, 1-14 Pac-10) beat No. 22 Southern California (19-8, 9-5) 68-58 Sunday night in Tempe, Ariz., snapping a school-record 15-game losing streak.
The Sun Devils beat a ranked opponent for the first time since March 20, 2003, when they defeated No. 19 Memphis in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
(2) Ohio State 85, Minnesota 67: At Minneapolis, Greg Oden and the Buckeyes (24-3, 12-1 Big Ten) hardly broke a sweat in beating the Gophers (9-18, 3-10), putting Ohio State in position for its first No. 1 ranking in 45 years.
Oden had 19 points, nine rebounds and two blocks and Ron Lewis added 16 points. Mike Conley Jr. finished with 10 assists and five steals for Ohio State.
Women
(1) Duke 69, (6) Maryland 57: At College Park, Md., Lindsey Harding scored 20 of her career-high 29 points in the pivotal first half, and the Blue Devils (28-0, 13-0) disappointed a spirited sellout crowd by defeating the Terrapins (25-4, 9-4) to remain undefeated and clinch the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title.
(2) North Carolina 93, Miami 70: At Chapel Hill, N.C., Ivory Latta scored 21 points and the Tar Heels (26-2, 10-2 ACC) defeated the Hurricanes (11-17, 2-11).
North Carolina shot nearly 46 percent, never trailed and led by as much as 35.
(8) George Washington 64, Saint Louis 47: At St. Louis, Kimberly Beck and Sarah-Jo Lawrence scored 16 points apiece and the Colonials (23-2, 12-0 Atlantic 10) overcame poor shooting to defeat the Billikens (11-15, 3-8).
(10) Arizona State 80, UCLA 69: At Los Angeles, Briann January (Lewis and Clark) had a career-high 22 points, nine assists and six steals to lead the Sun Devils (25-3, 15-2 Pac-10) past the Bruins (13-15, 7-9).
Emily Westerberg (CV) and Danielle Orsillo added 12 points apiece for the Sun Devils.
(11) Georgia 62, Auburn 55: At Auburn, Ala., reserve Janese Hardrick scored 20 points, including four free throws in the final minute, and the Bulldogs (23-5, 10-3 SEC) defeated the Tigers (17-11, 4-8).
(12) Vanderbilt 83, South Carolina 65: At Nashville, Tenn., Caroline Williams scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Commodores (23-4, 9-3 SEC) to a victory over the Gamecocks (15-13, 5-8).
(15) Baylor 71, Texas 56: At Waco, Texas, Latara Darrett scored 17 points and Angela Tisdale added 12 to lead the Bears (23-4, 10-3 Big 12) to a win over the Longhorns (16-11, 5-8).
(16) Purdue 69, Wisconsin 60: At Madison, Wis., Katie Gearlds scored a school-record 41 points as the Boilermakers (23-5, 12-2 Big Ten) defeated the Badgers (18-10, 7-8).
(24) Michigan St. 62, (4) Ohio St. 59: At Columbus, Ohio, Michigan State’s 6-foot-9 Allyssa DeHaan scored 25 points and the Spartans (21-6, 11-3 Big Ten) beat Ohio State (24-2, 13-1), ending the Buckeyes’ 17-game winning streak.
Rene Haynes had a steal and two free throws in the final seconds to help seal the victory for the Spartans.
(25) James Madison 71, Northeastern 57: At Boston, Mass., Meredith Alexis had 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Dukes (24-2, 15-0 CAA) past the Huskies (4-22, 3-12).
