Bulldogs bite Goats, advance to state tourney

Meagan Teade scored a game-high 16 points and Jordan Harazin added 14 as the Colfax girls basketball team topped Chelan 57-51 Saturday in the championship game of the 1A Eastern Regional Tournament at Wenatchee High School.

Elise Markley added nine points and Lauren Mellor pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (23-2), who outscored the Goats 34-26 in the second half.

With the win, Colfax advances to the state tournament, which begins Wednesday at the Yakima SunDome, as the top seed from the region.

Chelan advances as the No. 2 seed.

Other games scheduled for Saturday were Tonasket vs. Brewster and Freeman vs. Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls). The winners of those two games played at 6 p.m. for the third and final seed to the state tournament. The scores for those games were not reported.

On the boys’ side, Brewster beat Tonasket 56-49 to earn the No. 1 seed to the state tournament. The Tigers are the No. 2 seed.

Other games scheduled were Chelan vs. Freeman and Cashmere vs. Lakeside. The winners of those two games played for the third seed to the state tournament. The scores for those games were not reported.

Wrestling

Blackfoot captured the Idaho State 4A championship with 178 points. Sandpoint finished second with 165.5 and Lakeland was eight points back in third. Sandpoint had six in the state finals and four went home with gold medals. Blackfoot had two state champs. Sandpoint’s Tim Pepperdine (103 pounds), Joey Fio (125), Kyle Meschko (152) and Jerod Morris (171) captured state titles, while Alec Ward (112) and Taylor Morris (189) were second.

•No North Idaho 5A or 3A teams captured trophies, but five individuals won state championships in the 50th high school wrestling tournament at Idaho State University’s Holt Arena. In 5A, junior Jeremy Zabel of Coeur d’Alene repeated, winning at 160 pounds; sophomore Tracey Huffman of Lewiston won at 112; and senior Duane Carr of Post Falls was victorious at 189 pounds. In 3A, senior David Hayes of Timberlake had his arm raised at 140 and Bonners Ferry senior Jared Stone captured a title at heavyweight. Another CdA junior, Jesse Nielson, took second at 152, losing a 5-4 heartbreaker to Tyeson Mitton of Highland.
