THE SLICE

When families do not eat meals together, they miss out on the perfect chance to share a classic household dynamic.

Here’s how it goes.

Mom excitedly proposes some sort of home project or weekend outing. Sometimes this pitch includes words such as “sconces” or “valances.” Occasionally, bed and breakfasts are mentioned.

In response, the dad and a young son make knowing eye contact that unmistakably says, “She is out of her cotton-picking mind.”

It’s great stuff.

Now this is not just a guy thing. Moms and daughters excel at greeting dads’ harebrained schemes with theatrically wide-eyed expressions and shared glances that all but shout “O-Kaaaaaay.”

Not all reactions break along gender lines, of course. But sometimes those of the same sex simply see eye to eye.
