Polar Bear Plunge

Taking a freezing dip in Lake Coeur d’Alene on New Years’ Day is an annual tradition. Show up at Sanders Beach at 11:30 a.m., the dive is at noon.

Go skating

Riverfront Park Ice Palace is open today. Hours: Mondays-Thursdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and 7-8:30 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays and nights before school holidays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and 7-10 p.m.; Sundays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission: $4.25/adults and teens; $3.25/children, seniors and military; $2.75 for skate rental. Snowfest

Cross country, nordic and snow shoeing enthusiasts can try out new gear and attend free clinics showing how to properly use the equipment. Presented by Mountain Gear.
