Hints from Heloise

The Spokesman-Review

Dear Readers: If you’re working on a lifestyle change for the new year, – for example, losing weight, quitting smoking or exercising more – there are things you can do to improve your chances of success.

•Set several small goals instead of a big one. For instance, if you plan to stop smoking, focus on just getting through today without a cigarette … and gradually challenge yourself to take another step each day.

•Reward yourself for reaching your daily goals. Treat yourself to a manicure, a movie or simply a relaxing bath.

•Don’t expect perfection – if you slip up, don’t be too hard on yourself. Stay positive and vow to have stronger willpower the next time!

•Surround yourself with positive reinforcements. Ask loved ones to help keep you on track, or consider a support group. It’s always easier when someone else is there to cheer you on. – Heloise
