In brief: Motorist killed in head-on crash

The Spokesman-Review

A Deary, Idaho, man was killed Tuesday in a head-on crash with another Deary motorist.

The Idaho State Police said Kenneth L. Wildes, 53, was killed when an Isuzu Rodeo driven by 55-year-old Mitcheal A. Cooksey crossed the center line of State Highway 8, midway between Moscow and Troy, and struck Wildes’ Chevrolet Prism at 9:55 a.m.

Cooksey was taken to Gritman Medical Center in Moscow.

The hospital declined to give a condition report on Cooksey.

Police chief plans to leave this year

Coeur d’Alene police Chief Wendy Carpenter hasn’t formally announced that she’s retiring, but she said Monday it’s no secret she’s planning to leave the department sometime this year.

May 1 will be Carpenter’s 30th anniversary with the city Police Department.

“It’s a good department,” Carpenter said, adding that she was not unhappy with her work.

She said she was toying with the idea of being a snowbird and spending her winters in a warmer climate.

Carpenter began her career with Coeur d’Alene police in 1977 as a reserve officer and dispatcher.

Over the years she advanced, becoming a sergeant in 1991.

She was head of the department’s undercover drug task force for six years.

Carpenter was appointed chief in 2004, after then-Chief Tom Cronin resigned following a dispute with the City Council.

Carpenter said she will give the city three to four months’ notice once she decides on a retirement date.
