NHL: Crosby reaches 61 points in Penguins’ win
Sidney Crosby scored twice and set up another goal to become the first NHL player with 60 points this season, and the host Pittsburgh Penguins relied on Marc-Andre Fleury’s strong goaltending to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 Tuesday night.
Carolina outscored Pittsburgh 11-3 in the first two games of the four-game season series, but Fleury made 31 saves in his second shutout of the season.
Crosby has 61 points in 38 games; a season ago, he didn’t get the 60th point of his 102-point rookie season until Feb. 4.
Canucks 3, Flames 2: At Calgary, Alberta, Alex Burrows scored his first goal in 48 games and Vancouver held off the Flames for its season-best fourth consecutive victory. Vancouver has won all four games in the streak against Northwest Division opponents. The Canucks are one point behind first-place Minnesota and one ahead of Calgary.
Oilers 4, Panthers 1: At Edmonton, Alberta, Ryan Smyth scored his 20th goal of the season and the Oilers snapped a four-game losing streak with the 1,000th victory in franchise history, a win over Florida.
Wild 5, Thrashers 1: At St. Paul, Minn., Pierre-Marc Bouchard had two goals and two assists, Mark Parrish scored twice and Minnesota beat Atlanta.
Blackhawks 4, Blues 1: At. St. Louis, Nikolai Khabibulin made 38 saves and Chicago erased a third-period deficit with a three-goal flurry, ending the Blues’ eight-game point streak.
Red Wings 2, Ducks 1: At Detroit, Henrik Zetterberg scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and the Red Wings held on for a win over Anaheim. Detroit has won four in a row to pull into a first-place tie with Nashville in the Central Division. The Red Wings retired Steve Yzerman’s No. 19 jersey before the game.
Rangers 3, Devils 2 (SO): At East Rutherford, N.J., Marcel Hossa scored in the eighth round of a shootout to give New York a victory over New Jersey. With the win, the Rangers ended a five-game road losing streak.
Flyers 3, Islanders 2: At Uniondale, N.Y., Mike Knuble had a goal and an assist, and Philadelphia held off hard-charging New York. Robert Esche stopped 40 shots for the Flyers.
Canadiens 5, Lightning 2: At Montreal, Tomas Plekanec scored his second goal of the game 6:01 into the third period, sending the Canadiens to a win over Tampa Bay.
