All A’s during ‘Jan Term’

The diverse work of three top regional artists is set to open Monday in the Koehler Gallery on the Whitworth College campus.

Prints by Mary Farrell, paintings by Wendy Franklund Miller and mixed media pieces by Gina Freuen will be in the spotlight throughout the month.

“The Jan Term exhibit is designed to expose Whitworth students and the community to three of the best artists in the Spokane region,” says gallery director Scott Kolbo in a news release.

Freuen’s wood-fired and hand-painted porcelain forms are imbued with a sophisticated sense of three-dimensional design and high-quality craftsmanship.

“Scott encouraged us to place work that students would find interesting,” says Freuen, “so I’m showing mixed media wall hangings, works on paper and a few ceramic vessels.”

Farrell, an accomplished printmaker, “creates artworks of exceptional beauty,” Kolbo says.

Miller is bringing several pieces that incorporate encaustic paint (a paint consisting of pigment mixed with beeswax and fixed with heat after its application) and digital-print technology “to create hauntingly beautiful imagery,” Kolbo says.

An opening reception is Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery in the Fine Arts Building on the college grounds, 300 W. Hawthorne Road. The artists will give a panel discussion following the reception.

The free exhibit runs through Jan. 30. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
