Looking ahead

Many of the area boys and girls basketball teams were active during the recent holiday break.

One team wasn’t. That was the Lewiston boys. They come back from a nearly three-week layoff tonight when the Bengals (5-1 overall, 1-0 league) play host to Lake City (6-3, 1-1). The school’s girls teams play first as part of the doubleheader.

Then on Saturday, Lewiston’s boys and girls (6-4, 3-1) visit CdA. The girls tip off at 4:15, followed by the boys at 6. CdA’s girls (12-1, 6-0) lead the league.

Lewiston’s boys have been off 18 days since rallying for a 60-58 win in a league opener at Post Falls.

Looking around

There’s so much to catch up on. So here we go:

“Bonners Ferry senior guard Spenser Behrens, an all-Intermountain League pick last year, quit before the holiday break in a mutual agreement with coach Gordy Allured.

Allured declined to be specific on the record, but said his team was having some serious chemistry problems. “We’re playing so much better now,” Allured said Monday.

“Wallace senior Heather Moore, a starter on the Miners’ team that finished runner-up in the 1A state tournament last year, also quit recently, coach Kirby Krulitz confirmed.

That coupled with a recent injury by senior standout Lisa Carver (high ankle sprain) sent Wallace (5-7), which returned its starting lineup from a year ago, into a tizzy.

“I think things are salvageable,” Krulitz said.

Wallace senior point guard Cara Hayman, a four-year starter, recently broke the 1,000-point milestone.

“Kellogg’s girls recently lost starting guard Kaela Calabretta to a severe ankle injury. She could return by next weekend, coach Steve Bourgard said.

Still, the defensive-minded Wildcats (12-0, 2-0) continue to roll.

“Bonners Ferry three-year stater Kaitie Poston, a senior post, underwent minor knee surgery Tuesday to clean up a torn meniscus, coach Travis Hinthorn said.

Poston should return in two weeks. A standout thrower in track, Poston is being recruited heavily by Brigham Young University.

“She really wants to go to BYU,” Hinthorn said. “She’s very active in her church.”

“North Idaho basketball officials will experiment with three-man crews in some upcoming games, District I commissioner John Posnick said.

Three-man sets will be used in the Fight for the Fish, Prairie Pig and Battle for the Buck spirit doubleheaders along with the Kootenai-Wallace boys and girls doubleheader.

“We’ll do it once in each division,” Posnick said.

Washington is in its third year of using three-man crews. Posnick thinks it’s coming in Idaho.
