Brooks, Ducks clip Wildcats

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Aaron Brooks banked a shot over two defenders with 2 seconds left to give No. 15 Oregon a 79-77 victory over 10th-ranked Arizona on Sunday night in Tucson, Ariz.

Brooks finished with 21 points to lead the Ducks (16-1, 4-1 Pac-10) to their second victory over a Top 10 team in eight days. Oregon beat then-No. 1 UCLA on Jan. 6.

Bryce Taylor also scored 21 points, and Maarty Leunen had 14 points and 14 rebounds.

In a riveting showdown between two of the Pac-10’s most powerful teams, the Ducks tied it at 77 on Brooks’ 3-pointer with 1:50 to play. After Arizona point guard Mustafa Shakur turned the ball over, Brooks drove the right side of the lane and banked a shot over two defenders to put the Ducks ahead for good with 2 seconds to go.

Marcus Williams’ fallaway 18-footer at the buzzer was short.

Williams scored a career-high 34 points and had 12 rebounds for Arizona (13-3, 4-2) in the Wildcats’ second loss in three games. Arizona did not have a field goal in the final 5:15.

The Ducks are 6-0 away from home and have already passed last season’s 15 total victories.

(11) Duke 85, Miami 63: At Coral Gables, Fla., freshman Jon Scheyer scored a season-high 25 points and the Blue Devils (14-3, 1-2) shot a season-best 68 percent from the field in a win over the Hurricanes (9-9, 2-2) for their first Atlantic Coast Conference victory.

(22) Notre Dame 88, Seton Hall 76: At South Bend, Ind., Russell Carter had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Rob Kurz added 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Irish (15-2, 3-1 Big East) to a victory over the Pirates (10-6, 2-2).

Zach Hillesland added 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Notre Dame.
