Affeldt signs deal with Rockies

Pitcher Jeremy Affeldt accepted a $1.25 million, one-year deal with the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.

Affeldt, a 27-year-old left-hander from Medical Lake acquired from the Kansas City Royals in July, was a combined 8-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 54 games, including nine starts. Affeldt, who attended Northwest Christian High School in Spokane, made $1 million last season.

Affeldt and Denny Bautista came to Colorado in a trade for reliever Scott Dohmann and minor league first baseman Ryan Shealy.

The Rockies also signed outfielder Matt Holliday on Tuesday. Holliday agreed to a $4.4 million, one-year contract.

Chiefs Bruton suspended for hit

Spokane Chiefs forward Chris Bruton has been suspended by the Western Hockey League for three games under the league’s supplemental discipline rule for a hit in the second period of Saturday’s game that injured Tri-City defenseman Jarret Toll.

Toll suffered a broken jaw when he was sandwiched by Bruton and Chiefs forward David Linsley in the corner. Bruton received no penalty on the play.

Bruton has served one game of the suspension, Monday at Portland, and will miss Spokane’s next two games, Friday at Brandon and Saturday at Moose Jaw.

Real Madrid boss peppers Beckham

David Beckham was belittled by Real Madrid’s president as a Hollywood movie-star hopeful spurned by most of the world’s top soccer teams.

Team president Ramon Calderon, in comments expected to further sour relations between Beckham and the Spanish club, said the English midfielder joined the Los Angeles Galaxy because there were no other takers.

“The proof that our technical staff was correct not to retain him has been borne out by every other technical staff in the world not wanting him even though he was out of contract,” Calderon said.

He added: “David Beckham is going to be some sort of film actor living in Hollywood.”
