Dream Duals nightmare

The Washington Dream Duals are the final fling for wrestling teams whose minds are increasingly thinking about the postseason.

But this year’s event, Saturday at East Valley, won’t be your typical mythical state team championship event.

“It’s a cluster right now, I can tell you that,” said meet director and Knights coach Craig Hanson. “We have had drops and all kinds of things happening. The West Side people have been snowed out for two days.”

So this year’s event will be jury-rigged a bit with five Class 4A and 2A schools (instead of the normal six), four in 3A and seven in 1A. Hanson has also added a four-team Class B division.

Wrestling begins at 8 a.m., with the final placing matches set for around 2:30 p.m.

The 4A division has traditional powers University, Central Valley, Lake Stevens, Moses Lake and Columbia Basin League leader Pasco.

East Valley, Kelso, Squalicum and Enumclaw are the 3A schools after a total of seven other potential entrants withdrew at varying times.

Entrants in 2A are Aberdeen, Othello, Mt. Baker, Hoquiam and West Valley.

The 1A class is loaded with state powers Lakeside, Royal, Warden, Vashon, Tonasket, Lake Roosevelt and Connell.

Class B teams are Reardan, Liberty Bell, Wilbur-Creston-Keller and Republic.

Small schools, big results

Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) finished sixth and Deer Park 14th at the Rocky Mountain Rumble wrestling tournament in Orem, Utah, a 51-team tournament that attracted schools from eight Western states.

Lakeside’s Jacob Lauderdale finished second at 112 pounds. Wes McAdam was third at 152 and five other Eagles placed between sixth and eighth. They were Reid Chivers (189), Kyle Johnson (130), Kyle Cartwright (140), Dustin Baldwin (171) and Ryan Norstadt (103).

Deer Park’s Levi Zadorozny (112) and Cody Miller (145) were fourth and Sam Lane (130) was sixth.

Washington 3A power Sedro Woolley won the tourney with 269 points. Lakeside scored 182.5 and Deer Park 140.

“Despite a bout of illness that forced some wrestlers to withdraw, EV finished third last weekend in the Kelso tournament. The Knights had six finalists. Champions were Billy Cabbage (152 pounds) and Jimmy Martin (215). Finishing second were freshman Keith Babington (103) plus Matt Mehlbrech (119), Caleb Alvarado (145) and Clete Hanson (171).

This week in GSL

Ferris can take any remaining suspense out of Greater Spokane League boys basketball Friday with a win over visiting Shadle Park.

The Saxons (13-0) would lead by three games with six games remaining and they’ll be heavily favored in at least three of those. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Girls leader Lewis and Clark (13-0) is in good shape with a two-game lead, but there still could be jockeying for position behind them before the season ends in three weeks.

University (12-2), Mead (10-4), and Gonzaga Prep and Shadle (both 9-4) are all separated by two games and Ferris (7-6) lurks right behind that pack.

“There are tough games coming up, but it’s a fun league,” said U-Hi coach Mark Stinson, whose Titans beat Mead on Tuesday. “Teams we thought would be pretty good have turned out to be pretty good.”

Shadle is at G-Prep on Tuesday.
