Lake City girls rout Lewiston

Lake City High girls basketball coach Darren Taylor couldn’t have asked for a better start or finish to Senior Night Friday.

Taylor’s Timberwolves, who moved into the 5A state rankings this week at No. 4, got out fast and concluded strong as Lake City handled Lewiston 72-47 in an Inland Empire League game.

LC, which moved into second by a half game ahead of Post Falls, opened a 19-5 lead in the first quarter. In the fourth, the T-Wolves used an 18-3 run over the final 4 minutes to secure the key win.

“We wore them down at the end I thought,” said Taylor, whose team moved to 8-2 in league and 16-2 overall. “That’s very encouraging. We’re playing so well. In some of the timeouts I didn’t say anything. I just said ‘go get some water, you’re doing exactly what we are asking you to do’.”

His Lewiston counterpart, Pat Teichmer, meanwhile, left LC frustrated again by lack of intensity which translated in turnovers. The Bengals committed 15 in the first half and finished with 28.

“We lacked it (intensity) from the opening tip,” Teichmer said. “Unfortunately, it’s been a habit of these girls for a few games. We’ve been digging a hole because we’re not ready to play.”

Lewiston (8-8, 4-5) finds itself so far behind that it uses a lot of energy trying to claw back into games. That was again the case. The Bengals pulled within 54-44 midway through the fourth quarter before hitting a wall.

Playing the best among the seniors in their final regular-season game at home was guard Richelle Fenenbock, who scored a game-high 19 points to go with three steals and three assists. Sophomore post Katie Baker continued her solid play, scoring 16 points to go with 15 rebounds and three assists. Junior point guard Emma Hawn had 11 points and senior backup post Ali Vaughan played well, scoring 10.

Joey Larsen led Lewiston with 14 points.

“Also in the IEL, Moscow (3-14, 2-7) posted a 50-35 win over visiting Sandpoint (1-16, 0-10).
