Golf: Glover, Rose lead field
Lucas Glover overcame a five-stroke deficit to join Justin Rose at the top of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic leaderboard, shooting a 7-under-par 65 Saturday in the fourth round of the 90-hole tournament at Thousand Palms, Calif.
The 27-year-old Glover, a former Clemson star who has steadily moved up the ranks on the tour, matched Rose at 20-under-par, sticking his irons close to the pin on most greens at La Quinta and making a couple of 25-foot putts on others.
Rose, the 26-year-old Englishman who also appears to be a player on the rise, shot a 70 at The Classic Club, the site of the final round. That followed a third round when he had taken a two-shot lead with a 66 in cold, windy weather.
Glover is shooting for his second PGA Tour victory. He won the Funai Classic in 2005. Rose is looking for his first.
John Rollins was two shots back after a 67, and Jeff Quinney (66) and Charley Hoffman (68) were tied for fourth at 16 under.
Phil Mickelson, the champion in 2002 and 2004, had nine birdies on his way to a 66 and a 13-under total. He’s making his first start of the year.
After beginning with a bogey, Glover birdied the next hole, had four pars in a row, then seemed to get his round rolling when he made a 25-footer for birdie.
He began play on the back nine at La Quinta, made the turn at 34 then had five birdies on his way to a 31 on the front, including another 25-footer for birdie on No. 4.
Defending champion Chad Campbell missed the cut. He had a 72, his fourth round at 70 or higher, and was at 286. Last week’s winner in Hawaii, Paul Goydos, was in the final group to make the cut, at 282.
Champions Tour
Hale Irwin shot a 10-under 62 to take a three-stroke lead over Tom Kite and Brad Bryant after the second round of the season-opening MasterCard Championship at Kaupulehu-Kona, Hawaii.
The 61-year-old Irwin, coming off his first winless season in 12 years, had 10 birdies in his bogey-free round for a 16-under 128 total. He just missed shooting his age when a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 18 came up just short and to the right.
Kite shot a 64, and Bryant, the first-round leader, had a 68. Jim Thorpe had a 63 to join defending champion Loren Roberts (67) at 12 under. Allen Doyle (67), Jerry Pate (67) and Ben Crenshaw (68) were 11 under.
Irwin, who has a record 44 wins on the Champions Tour, is seeking his first win since the SAS Championship in the fall of 2005.
Women’s World Cup
Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst shot a 2-under 70 in alternate-shot play at the Women’s World Cup in Sun City, South Africa, positioning the United States for a final-day charge at first-place Paraguay.
The Americans had the only under-par round on a breezy day to take third place at 219. Paraguay had a 75 for 214, with Italy second at 218 after a 73.
Defending champion Sweden had another bad day, with Helen Alfredsson and Carin Koch carding an 81 to slump to 238. Finland and Brazil both shot 72, the only other nations apart from the U.S. to make par or better.
