Winfrey returns to selecting books

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

A new Oprah Winfrey book club pick – her first in more than a year – will be revealed this week.

“Oprah’s Book Club is back!” reads an announcement e-mailed Friday to Oprah Book Club members. “Set your TiVos and VCRs for Friday, January 26. Oprah will announce her next selection during the show!”

Winfrey’s previous choice, on Jan. 16, 2006, was Elie Wiesel’s Holocaust memoir, “Night.” It sold more than 1.5 million copies thanks to her endorsement, according to publisher Farrar, Straus & Giroux.

Around the same time, a scandal broke about a 2005 selection, James Frey’s “A Million Little Pieces,” which Frey later acknowledged contained numerous fabrications.
