Gymnastics meet Saturday
Greater Spokane League gymnastics has undergone a league facelift, in part because of a postseason change this year because of state enrollment reclassification.
Instead of an extra week of meets followed by district competition, the league opted for an all-team league meet, prior to regionals, to determine the regular-season champion.
Regular-season leader Mead will host the meet at 3 p.m. Saturday.
All 10 teams will participate and be awarded points based on meet finish. First place is worth 10 points, second worth eight on down through zero for 10th. Those points are added to those already awarded for each league win.
Mead finished 9-0 during the counting part of the dual meet season and 13-0 overall. The Panthers are followed by University, Central Valley and Shadle Park.
With fewer 4A than 3A gymnastics programs there are only four team state berths, one for six GSL and Columbia Basin League schools, one individual all-around qualifier and the top three individuals in each of four events.
The GSL’s three 3A schools fare a little better, vying with the CBL for one state team berth, two all-around and five individuals per event.
A whole lot of calcium
Neighboring schools Deer Park and Riverside wrestle for the Great Northern League championship tonight during the Battle of the Horns. It’s been a while since the head-butting rivalry between the Stags and Rams has carried such magnitude.
Both teams are 6-0 entering the final matches of the GNL season. Clarkston, which lost 31-30 to Deer Park and 41-25 to Riverside, is third at 4-2.
The Battle of the Bone tonight between Greater Spokane League unbeaten Central Valley and once-beaten University could give CV the title outright, or with a U-Hi victory, result in a three-way tie with EV, which lost to CV Wednesday.
The annual CV-U-Hi rivalry is always a raucous, gymnasium-filling affair.
Friday night basketball
GSL: Rogers and East Valley throw down “The Gauntlet,” their spirit game at EV, at 5:30 p.m. Both Knights and Pirates wore gauntlet-style gloves, hence the name. In a key boys contest, Central Valley is at Gonzaga Prep.
GNL: The second half of the season begins with West Valley at Medical Lake for the Scrambled Egg game (Eagles, Cardinals, get it?) The Eagles boys have a two-game lead in league.
NEA: It’s Freeman vs. Colfax, Part II, at Colfax. The teams are just a week removed from their last meeting, in which the Freeman boys and Colfax girls prevailed.
Class B: Playoffs are nigh. Republic boys host St. George’s in a Panorama biggie. The Bi-County regular season ends on Tuesday.
