In brief: Roenick will retire after 18-year career
Jeremy Roenick is retiring, a newspaper reported, after an 18-year NHL career in which he became the third-leading American goal-scorer in league history.
Roenick, a nine-time All-Star who played with four teams, sent a text message to a reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer reading, “I’m retiring; is that still news?”
The 37-year-old center was also an outspoken critic of the lockout that wiped away the 2004-05 season.
Roenick played in 70 games last season for Phoenix.
“The Atlanta Thrashers re-signed forward Slava Kozlov to an $11 million, three-year contract.
“The Calgary Flames signed captain Jarome Iginla and assistant captain Robyn Regehr to five-year contract extensions. Financial terms of the deals were not released.
“Defenseman Teppo Numminen will return for a 19th NHL season after re-signing with the Buffalo Sabres for a one-year deal worth $2.6 million.
“Goaltender Vesa Toskala signed an $8 million, two-year extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“The Montreal Canadiens signed forward Tom Kostopoulos to a $1.8-million, two-year deal.
“The New York Islanders have signed veteran left wing Ruslan Fedotenko to a $2.9-million, one-year deal.
“The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Matt Greene to a two-year deal. Financial terms were not released.
Basketball
Bobcats sign Carroll
Guard Matt Carroll and the Charlotte Bobcats came to terms on a six-year, $27 million contract. Last season, Carroll averaged a career-high 12.1 points and shot 42 percent from 3-point range.
The Bobcats also said that they had signed first-round pick Jared Dudley to his rookie contract.
“Al Williams, a member of Drake’s 1969 NCAA Final Four team and one of the school’s all-time leading rebounders, died of liver cancer in Decatur, Ga., Monday. He was 60.
“Guard Juan Carlos Navarro, whose rights are owned by the Washington Wizards, will be allowed by his Spanish club to leave for the NBA.

Drivers penalized
NASCAR has penalized the Nextel Cup teams of Kyle Busch and Johnny Sauter for rule infractions found on their cars during the postrace inspection following Sunday’s race at New Hampshire International Speedway. NASCAR said that Busch and Sauter were each penalized 25 points.
“David Beckham is confident he can recover from an ankle injury originally suffered on June 6 at the European Championship qualifier in time for his debut with the Los Angeles Galaxy in a July 21 exhibition against Chelsea in California.
“Cuba’s Dayron Robles beat David Payne for the second time this week in the 110-meter hurdles at the Zagreb Grand Prix in Zagreb, Croatia. Robles won in 13.35 seconds.
