Brigham Young scored two late goals Saturday and edged the Spokane Spiders 3-2 in Premier Development League soccer play at Spokane Falls Community College.

Zach DeFrancis’ goal off an assist from Justin Norton in the 80th minute tied the game at 2.

Toni Nicoli then scored off an assist from Daniel McKinley 2 minutes later to give the Cougars (10-1) the lead for good.

Jake Moug’s goal in the 19th minute gave Spokane an early 1-0 lead.

Spokane’s Dade Smith made 15 saves in goal for the Spiders, who lost at home for the first time this season.

Spokane dropped to 6-7 on the season, 2 1/2 games back from the second-place Tacoma Tide (7-3).

The Spiders host the Tide at 7:05 p.m. on July 20 at SFCC and have to win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Baseball

Kyle Foster allowed one run on four hits while striking out five in seven innings, leading the Wenatchee Apple Sox to a 7-1 win over the Spokane RiverHawks in a West Coast Collegiate Baseball League game at Avista Stadium.

Curtis Van Wyck had four hits and Ryan Davis drove in two runs and scored twice to lead Wenatchee.

Luke Farden took the loss for Spokane after allowing four earned runs on eight hits in four innings.

With the win, the Apple Sox (8-11) move ahead of the RiverHawks (7-12) into second place in the East Division standings.

Spokane and Wenatchee are off today before playing a doubleheader Monday at Avista. The first game starts at 5:30 p.m.
