Locally: Williams’ staff at NIC receives big honor

Head coach Don Don Williams and the rest of the North Idaho College softball coaching staff were named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association/National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Coaching Staff of the Year for the West Region.

Williams’ assistants include Casi Reisenauer, Ron Bradstreet and Tammy Bradstreet.

The coaching staff led the Cardinals to a second-place finish at the NJCAA national tournament, the second-highest team finish in NIC history. North Idaho finished 2006-07 with a 46-26 mark.

Awards

Grand Rapids receiver and linebacker Jerome Riley, a former Washington State standout, has been named to the 2007 Arena Football League All-Ironman Team.

Riley recorded 78 receptions for 845 yards and 12 touchdowns while registering 31.5 tackles and four interceptions during the 2007 season.

Badminton

Spokane’s John Harvey earned three medals at the National Senior Olympics held June 22 through Saturday at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky.

Harvey earned gold in the 80-85 Men’s Singles and 75-79 Men’s Doubles and took silver in the 75-79 Mixed Doubles.

Baseball

West Valley’s Casey Sherrill has signed a letter of intent to attend Spokane Falls Community College and play for the baseball team next season.

Basketball

Derek Miller, a 2005 Cheney graduate who played two seasons at Big Bend Community College, has committed to attend Northwest University and play for the basketball team next season.

“Former Northwest Christian players Joel Ryman and Joe Grewe have committed to attend Northwest Nazarene University and compete for the Crusaders next fall.

Tennis

The Spokane City Tennis Tournament, which has been played for 96 years, will be held July 19-22 at the Spokane Racquet Club. The men’s singles winner will have his name inscribed on the Patten Cup, which has been in existence for 47 years.

The tournament is open to Spokane County residents. Entries close Friday. There are several divisions for both men’s and women’s singles and doubles. Fees are $20 for singles and $28 per doubles team. For information, call Kent Brennan,747-1322.

Track and field

George Mathews of Hayden Lake won the 60-64 5-kilogram hammer throw at the National Senior Olympics on July 1 in Louisville, Ky.

Mathews’ throw of 167 feet, 4 inches set a record.
