YAKIMA – Shane Byrne and Aaron Hanke drove in two runs apiece to lead the Yakima Bears to a 5-2 victory over the Spokane Indians in Northwest League play Sunday at Yakima County Stadium.
The Bears (7-13), who have won the first two games in the three-game series, pulled within two games of the front-running Indians (9-11) in the East Division. Spokane has lost three straight.
Byrne staked the Bears to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI groundout.
Yakima got all the runs it would need to pick up the victory with a three-run third. Byrne tripled in a run and Hanke doubled in a pair to make it 4-0.
Spokane pushed across its first run in the top of the fifth . Kyle Murphy drew a one-out walk, took second on a single by Billy Killian and scored on a two-out double by Matthew Lawson.
Yakima tacked on a run in the seventh to make it 5-1.
Spokane’s final tally came in the eighth when Lawson walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Renny Osuna.
Derek Holland (0-3) took the loss for Spokane. He allowed four earned runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings.
