Villwock wins in Detroit
DETROIT – It was the 99th running of the Chrysler Jeep Superstores Gold Cup unlimited hydroplane race Sunday, the most venerable event in motor sports. But for Miss Elam driver Dave Villwock, the magic number was six – as in the sixth time he has won the Super Bowl of power boat racing.
Team owner Erick Ellstrom has been trying to win this race for 12 years and cheered from the pit trailer as Villwock, 53, from Auburn, Wash., took all three elimination heats in Miss Elam and won the Gold Cup final going away at an average speed of 147.687 mph.
Steve David of Lighthouse Point, Fla., was second in Oh Boy Oberto at 146.526, and J. Michael Kelly of Puyallup, Wash., third in the Spirit of Detroit at 142.056.
